Rediscovering the Walisongo, Indonesia: A potential new destination for international pilgrimage

The current paper explores the tradition of Walisongo, the nine saints or nine friends of God, that according to tradition initiated the islamisation of Java in the XV and XVI centuries. Largely unknown outside of Indonesia, the Wali Songo pilgrimage remains unfamiliar in the archipelago as well. Besides allowing a deeper understanding of the roots of Indonesian religious history and of the spread and acceptance of Islam, rediscovering the Wali Songo may help to reintroduce a peaceful image of the Muslim world. In such a way, reactivating the tradition of Wali Songo outside of the country but also inside, may support the idea of a peaceful religion of traders, of scholars and culture lovers open and able to integrate the traditions of other cultural groups. The Wali Songo are said to be at the origin of pesantren (Muslim religious schools) and largely used local arts and culture in their teachings. In an area of Central and East Java where minority groups may tend to impose the views of a reformist not to say a rigorist Islam, the Wali Songo teachings may offer a ‘new common vehicle’, a synonym of understanding, peace and cultural respect. If the development of international pilgrimage activity would suppose the setting up of proper infrastructures, to do so, may also boost new areas of services that would definitely support regional developments in the largest archipelago of the world and in a country that, besides being laic and governed by the principles of Pancasila, is before all the country worldwide with the largest number of Muslim citizens. In a planet currently governed by globalization, the origins of the Wali Songo, which are still relevant, if discussed, would demonstrate that ideas and religions can be shared, peacefully, across the land and seas

Competitive Intelligence For Insular Territories

For centuries, the intrinsic and ubiquitous parameters of insular territories have governed social, economic and political life within the island and with outer territories. Besides some biological and physical determinism, there exists a psychological factor that conducts islanders to feel that they possess a rich and a unique identity (Gombaud, 2007:593). Nowadays, islands are impacted by communication technologies and globalization, international law and politics. The opening to tourism, international trade and foreign capital, modifies the usual landmarks and often means that traditional activities and know-how are abandoned. Historically located at the periphery, islands suddenly appear at the centre of multiple preoccupations, become places of conflict, are concerned by supranational decisions. Foreign bodies (EU-UN-UNCLOS) regulate but mostly challenge the insular ecosystem. Sensitive to pollution and climate change, islands strive to produce energy and water, to preserve the environment, to enhance living conditions and offer jobs. This paper examines Competitive Intelligence, by offering an innovative, transversal and holistic framework to support island development. This may allow the strong and balanced evolution of a territory, insert it in the regional and national economy, boost the creation of jobs, identify areas of growth and provide added-valued (Dou et al., 2019)

Dual Relief of T-lymphocyte Proliferation and Effector Function Underlies Response to PD-1 Blockade in Epithelial Malignancies

Although understanding of T-cell exhaustion is widely based on mouse models, its analysis in patients with cancer could provide clues indicating tumor sensitivity to immune checkpoint blockade (ICB). Data suggest a role for costimulatory pathways, particularly CD28, in exhausted T-cell responsiveness to PD-1/PD-L1 blockade. Here, we used single-cell transcriptomic, phenotypic, and functional approaches to dissect the relation between CD8+ T-cell exhaustion, CD28 costimulation, and tumor specificity in head and neck, cervical, and ovarian cancers. We found that memory tumor–specific CD8+ T cells, but not bystander cells, sequentially express immune checkpoints once they infiltrate tumors, leading, in situ, to a functionally exhausted population. Exhausted T cells were nonetheless endowed with effector and tumor residency potential but exhibited loss of the costimulatory receptor CD28 in comparison with their circulating memory counterparts. Accordingly, PD-1 inhibition improved proliferation of circulating tumor–specific CD8+ T cells and reversed functional exhaustion of specific T cells at tumor sites. In agreement with their tumor specificity, high infiltration of tumors by exhausted cells was predictive of response to therapy and survival in ICB-treated patients with head and neck cancer. Our results showed that PD-1 blockade–mediated proliferation/reinvigoration of circulating memory T cells and local reversion of exhaustion occur concurrently to control tumors

Modulation de la cicatrisation cornéenne par des protéases de la matrice extracellulaire

Notre objectif de recherche était d'évaluer une approche thérapeutique novatrice pour traiter les opacités cornéennes en ciblant le dépôt de collagène de type III dans le tissu cicatriciel. Nous avons choisi un modèle de surexpression de la métalloprotéase matricielle (MMP)-14 par thérapie génique cornéenne. La transfection des cellules du stroma cornéen était assurée par un adeno-associated virus de type 2 codant pour la MMP-14 (AAV-MMP14). Nous avons retrouvé une amélioration clinique, avec moins d'opacité, deux semaines après une blessure cornéenne opacifiante des souris ayant reçu le vecteur AAV-MMP14. L'étude de l'expression de gènes impliqués dans le processus cicatriciel et la formation des opacités montre, chez les souris ayant été traitées avec l’AAV-MMP14, une augmentation réduite par rapport au groupe contrôle.Our research objective was to evaluate a novel therapeutic approach to treat corneal opacity by targeting the deposition of type III collagen in scar tissue. Two weeks after an opacification-causing corneal injury was inflicted on mice that had received the AAV-MMP14 vector, we found clinical improvement with reduced opacity. An analysis of genes that are involved in both the healing process and in the formation of opacities shows a reduced augmentation of their expression in mice that had been treated with AAV-MMP14, when compared with the control group

La fabrique d’une exposition

Les expositions forment un élément essentiel d’ouverture des archives au grand public. La mise en oeuvre de ces parcours temporaires pose nombre de difficultés méthodologiques et techniques, mais relève d’un véritable enjeu de programmation culturelle. La réalisation de ces projets, qui s’étend souvent sur deux années, nécessite la coordination de multiples intervenants dans un calendrier contraint et en mode projet. Les acteurs principaux en sont les commissaires scientifiques et techniques, les scénographes et les entreprises prestataires. La communication comme la médiation sont indispensables au succès public de ces manifestations. From Strategic Intelligence to Gastronomy

International audienceThe classic methods of diplomacy are evolving and now encompass very diverse aspects such as e-diplomacy, fashion, gastronomy, culture, lifestyle, etc. At the same time, the development of influence becomes a major concern, whether for states, regions or companies. In this context, any element of positive diversification must be taken into account, analyzed and used to increase attractiveness. In this context, gastronomy has its place. This presentation, after putting into perspective the notion of influence and its place in a global strategy of attractiveness, will illustrate various aspects relating to the use of gastronomy as an element of differentiation. The approach will be both psychological and practical. The positive but also negative aspects encompassing the notion of gastronomy will be analyzed, such as its inclusion in the SDG (Sustainable Development Goal) objectives, health, economy, impact in medias and in social networks, etc.Les méthodes classiques de la diplomatie évoluent et englobent désormais des aspects très divers tels que la e-diplomatie, la mode, la gastronomie, la culture, l’art de vivre, etc. Parallèlement, le développement de l’influence devient une préoccupation majeure, que ce soit pour les États, les régions ou les entreprises. Dans ce contexte, tout élément de diversification positive doit être pris en compte, analysé et utilisé pour accroître l’attractivité. Dans ce contexte, la gastronomie a toute sa place. Cette présentation, après avoir mis en perspective la notion d’influence et sa place dans une stratégie globale d’attractivité, illustrera différents aspects relatifs à l’utilisation de la gastronomie comme élément de différenciation. L’approche sera à la fois psychologique et pratique. Les aspects positifs, mais aussi négatifs englobant la notion de gastronomie seront analysés, tels que son intégration dans les objectifs des ODD (Objectif de Développement Durable), la santé, l’économie, l’impact dans les médias et les réseaux sociaux, etc
